In December 1999, Peter Kitchen was voted by fans of both Doncaster Rovers and Leyton Orient FC as one of their greatest ever players. In more recent polls conducted by BBC Football focus, Fourfour two magazine and other popular fanzines, he was voted as one of their best players, some of these polls taking place more than 20 after he played for them and even today he is still considered a 'Cult Hero' amongst both sets of fans.

Born in Mexborough , South Yorkshire in 1952, Peter Kitchen attended Mexborough Grammar school and represented Yorkshire Senior schools and England B teams. He was spotted by Doncaster Rovers Manager, Lawrie McMenemy and signed for Rovers in June 1970, who beat Leeds United for his signature by just a few hours. He made his Football League debut at Shrewsbury Town on 27th November 1970, scoring after just 90 seconds and repeated the feat by scoring after 95 seconds of his home debut the following week against Swansea City.

Between 1970 and 1985, Peter Kitchen went on to play for 5 different league clubs, including 2 spells at Leyton Orient and scored 213 senior goals from 546 senior appearances. He was Fulham's record transfer signing of over £150,000 in 1979 , a record that stood for 20 years until the club was bought by Harrods owner, Mohammed Al Fayed. Peter was also transferred to Cardiff City for £120,000 and played in Hong Kong and the MISL in America. Even after his retirement from the professional game, Peter played for a number of other clubs and teams and while playing for the Corinthian Casuals Vets up to the age of 53, scored an amazing 280 goals from 228 appearances.
